Overview:
Semaxa is an oral prescription medication containing the active ingredient Semaglutide. 1 It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 analogues) and is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes.
-
Type 2 Diabetes Management: It is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.
-
Cardiovascular Protection: Like other oral semaglutide products, it helps reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks, strokes, or cardiovascular death) in patients with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease.
-
Weight Management (Secondary Benefit): While its primary medical indication is blood sugar control, it commonly aids in weight reduction as a secondary effect due to its influence on appetite and digestion.
Semaxa mimics the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone released by the body after a meal. It helps control blood sugar through three main mechanisms:
-
Increases Insulin Production: It signals the pancreas to release more insulin when blood glucose levels are high.
-
Suppresses Glucagon: It lowers glucagon secretion, preventing the liver from releasing too much unnecessary sugar into your bloodstream.
-
Delays Gastric Emptying: It slows down the digestive process, keeping food in your stomach longer. This promotes a feeling of fullness and decreases your overall appetite.
